Automated Sample Processing in a Multi-Robot Environment
With the integration of our new Biomek i-Series i3 Liquid Handler, we have taken another step toward fully automated laboratory processes. The system is embedded in a multi-robot environment that enables continuous operation even when deck space on the instrument is limited.
Since the available space on the liquid handler deck is restricted, the supply of new labware and the removal of used labware are handled by an UR10 Collaborative Robot. Acting as an interface robot, it precisely loads and unloads the system and connects the liquid handler with the surrounding laboratory logistics.
For further transport within the laboratory, a mobile robot is used. It delivers new labware to the system and transfers used labware to downstream process stations or storage areas. This combination of stationary and mobile robotics enables continuous and unattended operation.
The coordination of all process steps is managed by the workflow management software SAMI (Scheduling and Method Integration), which orchestrates the different instruments and robotic systems and ensures smooth interaction across the entire workflow.
This integrated setup demonstrates how modern laboratory automation—combining liquid handling, collaborative robotics, and mobile logistics—can create efficient, scalable, and highly flexible laboratory workflows.
